The 3rd March 2019 of every year is set aside by the World Health Organization (WHO) as World Hearing Day in order to sensitized public on training/hearing impairment.
The Department of E.N.T AKTH celebrated this year’s day with a Theme; “Check your Hearing”. The presenter, who is the Head of Department, Dr. Abdulhakeem Adebayo Aluko explained that among the activities designed to celebrate the World Hearing Day were;-
- Outreach activities, where staff of AKTH and people who are at risk of contracting hearing loss were invited for free check.
- Radio and Television sensitization programme and special education with school pupils of Sani Mainagge Kano were also invited for free hearing check.
The Head of Department further explained that hearing loss can affect all categories of human beings i.e neonates paediatrics and adults.
He added that among the causes of hearing loss are family history, premature birth and infections suffered by mothers during pregnancy, exposure to loud sounds, high blood pressure, diabetics to mention but a few.
Dr. Aluko advised on measures of tackling hearing loss such as avoiding loud noise, treat ear disease promptly, go for ear checkup at least every six month.
In her speech, Dr. Nafisa Bello Muhd a specialist at Ear Nose and Throat Department advocates for people to know their status of the hearing.
She appreciated the Outreach Programme, as it offered less privileged people to access proper checking, medication and advice for further care.
Mallam Salisu Adamu a Mechanic and Salisu Aliyu both benefited from the programme. They thanked the Department of E.N.T and AKTH for organizing the programm
