Functions of the Department:

The department offers tertiary care in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as teaching, research and community services. These services are offered in the following areas:

1. Antenatal, delivery and post natal care to pregnant women;

2. Specialised gynaecologic inpatient and outpatient services;

3. Surgical care for gynaecologic and obstetric conditions;

4. 24-hours obstetrics and gynaecologic emergency care;

5. Family planning services;

6. Colposcopy, Pap Smear services and intra uterine insemination;

7. Ultrasonography;

8. Training medical students and Resident doctors in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

9. Conduct of research;

10. Community services in the form of training of health workers from the state and local government as well as provision of community health education.

Staff Development/Training/Seminars and Conferences Attended:

The department made tremendous progress during the year under review. Five out of the six registrars that sat for the Part I fellowship examination passed while all the four Senior Registrars that sat for the Part II fellowship examination of the West African College of Surgeons also passed. Two senior registrars have submitted their books to the West African College of Surgeons for the part II April, 2013 exams and they have been accepted.

The department conducts a daily audit of the activities of the proceeding 24 hours in the ‘morning review session’ thus improving clinical care. Also in the review of the hospital mortality report for preceding years, the department continued to record lowest mortality in the hospital.
