HOD Nursing ServicesThe Department of Nursing provides high quality patient care based on strong commitments to practice, education, research, innovation and collaboration.  Nursing is a profession that believes that man is a bio-psychosocial being and his needs are the focus of all nursing activities.  The healthcare system exists to meet the needs of the consumers of healthcare by providing primary, secondary and tertiary health maintenance activities to ensure that individuals, families and communities are assisted to maintain a high level of wellness.

The Department is headed by an Acting Assistant Director who is being assisted by six other Chief Nursing Officers as Coordinators.  They are charged with tasks of overseeing total patients care, together with the Ward Managers.  The Ward Managers ensure the patient welfare in liaison with other healthcare workers and the clinical departments of the hospital.

The Department of Nursing Services is the single largest department with 577 Nurses, 351 Health Attendants, including Pantry Staff and Health Assistants.  The Department coordinates 25 units, 17 in-patients units and 8 out-patients units including the Theatres and other special diagnostic and treatment units.  Average daily bed occupancy during the year was 300 in-patients.

During the year, a total of 14 Nurses were deployed to the department.

The department provides both general and specialized nursing care to the patients on 24 hours basis through the shift and call basis.

Departmental Functions:

The department is charged with the following functions:

1. Select and maintain qualified, credentialed and competent nursing staff.,

2. Communicate criteria for standards of nursing practice and patient care health teaching, so that these standards are consistent with the vision statement and philosophy of nursing,

3.  Maintain a program of continuous performance improvement,

4.  Promote policies approved by the Hospital management that impact the Nursing Department,

5. Conduct clinical studies and promote nursing research to enhance patients care,

6. Participate in committees and make recommendations for changes in practice or care and follow through where appropriate with changes,

7. Present budgetary recommendations to the budget and finance committees of the hospital,

8. Participate in special programs planned by the Hospital Management,

9. Assume responsibility and accountability for nursing care provided to patients,

10. Provide regular clinical and administrative reports on patients care and activities.

Staff Disposition:

The Department has a total of 577 Nurses and 351 Hospital Attendants inclusive of Pantry and Clinical Assistants.  During the year, a total of 14 Nurses were deployed to the Department.  However, about 20 nurses left the services of the hospital.

Achievements

1.  2 nurses were conferred with fellowship of West African College of Nursing

2. Paediatric Surgical Ward was opened within the year.

Staff Development/Training

1. A number of Nurses were sponsored to undergo various training both within and outside the country.

2. 3 Nurses were sponsored for their Bsc Nursing in BUK

3. 2 Nurses are undergoing their Msc programme,1 Nurse also sponsored for his Msc in Infection Control.
